Understanding Shapes
Do you get overwhelmed when looking at a building that you want to sketch? I get it. Here is one tip that may help you to get past that overwhelm.
One key to sketching architecture lies in seeing overall shapes in buildings. Start by observing the structure carefully and breaking it down into basic shapes. This will help you capture the structure's essence without getting lost in the details.
For example, let's take a look at one of my favorite buildings, the Copper Building in New York City. (See photo below).

Take a look at the Copper. What overall shape do you see in the building? Does it remind you of any letters of the alphabet? For me, it kind of looks like a wonky letter "H" with a crooked top.
When I sketch this building, I don't focus on the details. I'm not counting how many windows there are. I'm not counting all of the horizontal lines.
My end goal is to capture the "H". Below are some example of my Copper building sketches. Note that the colors in my sketches don't match the actual color of the Building. More about colors in an upcoming newsletter.
